One of the many natural treasures on Kume Island are the abundance of trees. Garcinia, known as Fukugi in Japanese are just one of many examples on the island. In the Madomari Area, there is a meridian in the road with a line of old garcina trees.

The garcina trees were prized as windbreakers since they grow tall and can be formed into a kind of wall. Photos from the 1950s show the vibrant trees along roads thoughout Kume Island. These trees were important as farmers and common people were not allowed walls to protect their privacy and crops. The trees still serve their ancient purpose along some fields.
