Every year, Kume Island is host to many fun events. We'll be highlighting upcoming events, and report on current ones. Simply click a link below to find out more about an event.

Please Note: The 2016 fiscal year calendar has not yet been released by Kumejima Town. This yearly calendar is normally released around April, and will include most annual events. Once that is released, 2016 events will be updated here.

    The yearly two-day festival celebrating the blooming Sakura Trees on Kumejima.

    Join in this yearly ride around the island. The Sugar Ride has courses for many levels of expertise.

    The Annual Umi Biraki is a ceremony celebrating the start of beach season. There is also a beach baseball tourney.

    The Dragon Boat races take place at three different ports each year. Join the fun as different groups compete in this traditional race.

    The Maja Area is home to the first of the yearly sumo competitions. It take place before the Tenko Shrine.

    A day full of hand-made projects, including traditional toys and modern art.


  • Kume FestKumejima Festival (8/1-2/2015)

    The largest event on Kumejima is the two-day Kumejima Matsuri in August. Live events, food, fun, and more.

  • Gima SumoGima Sumo Competition (8/9/2015)

    Gima Sumo takes place in the Gima Area near the Kumeshima Elementary School, and includes a unique historic ceremony.

    The traditional Kume Island Harvest Festival takes place on the 25th day of the 6th month of the lunar calendar. Don't miss this look at the culture and traditions dating from the Ryukyu Kingdom

    Back to back with the Gima Sumo Festival, the Janadou Sumo Competition takes place at a small shrine in the south eastern part of the island.

    Every year there is a small festival near the Eef Beach area celebrating eisa from around the island. From children to adults myriad performances entertain.

    The Nakachi Sumo competition is the last competition of the year on Kume Island.

    On the largest full moon of the year is a festival in the Kanegusuku area. The highlight of the festival is a series of traditional dances and lion dance.

    Traditional music is a large part of Okinawan culture. On Kume Island the folk song competition highlights local traditional music.

    Two days of Hula, food, and entertainment at two of Kumejima's resort hotels.

    Most areas in Japan host sports days (undokai) to stay fit and have a little friendly competition. Kumejima has a town sports day in addition to elementary and junior high sports days

    The Kumejima Marathon offers several scenic routes for runners of all ages. This popular run is a great way to see Kumejima.

    Kume Island hosts many diverse industries. The Sangyo Matsuri is a chance for locals and visitors to learn more about what keeps the island going.

    An Ekiden is a marathon relay that takes place each year. Groups from different areas of the island compete in a race around the island.
